Longest Lunar Eclipse of the Century

The moon will be totally eclipsed for an estimated 1 hour and 43 minutes in the prime viewing region, according to NASA predictions.

The eclipse is visible from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, most of Asia and South America and in the United Kingdom from around 21:00 to 22:15 BST. In metro cities, space enthusiasts may miss out on watching the moon being eclipsed due to pollution.

"During a very dark eclipse the moon may be nearly invisible. These lunar events, which occur when the moon passes into Earth's shadow, are safe to view directly with the naked eye, telescopes or binoculars".

However, he said it was still worth seeing as the next blood moon would not be visible in New Zealand until May 2021.

The full moon will pass through the shadow of the Earth and for 103 minutes the moon will turn varying shades of red.
