Republicans file impeachment articles against Rosenstein - here’s why they did it

Last month, Rosenstein and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, had a particularly heated exchange as the lawmaker and others grilled the deputy attorney general during a hearing about the FBI and Justice Department's handling of the Hillary Clinton email and Trump-Russia investigations.

The impeachment resolution came about two hours after GOP lawmakers met with Justice Department officials about the documents.

"Multiple times we've caught DOJ officials hiding information from Congress, withholding relevant documents, or even outright ignoring Congressional subpoenas-and now we have evidence that Mr. Rosenstein signed off on a document using unverified political opposition research as a cornerstone of a FISA application to spy on an American citizen working for the Trump campaign", he said. "The only thing we have control over is the ability to bring impeachment straight to the floor", Meadows said. House Republicans have been entangled in a back and forth with the Justice Department for months over access to classified Federal Bureau of Investigation documents.

Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to discredit the Justice Department, and, by extension, the special counsel's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election. Neither the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Bob Goodlatte, nor Trey Gowdy, head of the House Oversight Committee, signed on to the impeachment effort.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives' intelligence committee, said on Twitter the articles of impeachment "were filed in bad faith and show extraordinary lengths to which House Republicans will go to protect Trump".

"I want the documents and I'm not a big fan of drama, I like the documents", the South Carolina Republican said, explaining that he opposes impeachment because it's punishment and not a remedy to obtaining the documents in question.

Senior Justice Department officials have rejected the criticism and described historic levels of cooperation with Congress to share files connected to the FBI investigations of Hillary Clinton's emails, as well as Trump's campaign contacts with Russian Federation.

Democrats have criticized the Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller's investigation.

Nearby police searched the apartment where Hussain lived with his parents and siblings, carrying out boxes of potential evidence. No word yet on the number of injuries, though CTV is reporting at least one person being loaded into an ambulance.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

"We're hopeful that we'll get some documents that we identified today".

But Republican lawmakers maintain that while the Justice Department is turning over more materials, it has yet to fully comply with the subpoenas. This means that it does not force House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) to call a vote on the resolution immediately. The House passed a resolution last month demanding full compliance with the subpoenas.
