Trump said if May went ahead with the "soft Brexit" plan outlined last Friday - that led to the resignations of Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis - it will "kill" any prospect of a US-UK trade deal.

When asked about Trump's comments, May's spokesman said she was looking forward to sitting down with Trump to talk him through the negotiating stance.

"I think he has not been hospitable to a government that is very important".

"The spirit of friendship and cooperation between our countries, our leaders and our people, that most special of relationships, has a long and proud history", she said, adding that the United States was "not just the closest of allies but the dearest of friends".

With its straw-blond hair, questionable face tan and unmistakably out-of-proportion hands, a blimp meant to depict President Donald Trump as a screaming baby flew outside the Parliament building in London Friday.

"I didn't criticize the prime minister", Trump said in regard to an interview with The Sun that was published before his joint press conference with Theresa May, according to the BBC.

In a sometimes rambling performance following talks with May at her country retreat of Chequers, the United States president dismissed comments made in an interview with the Sun that was published on Thursday night. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me. Look at what is going on in London", Trump said, before referring directly to Khan: "I think he has done a very bad job on terrorism.

The lack of divergence on rules in the farming sector is one of the main concerns of Tory MPs opposed to May's plan, and they will see Trump's statement as proof that the Brexit plan will indeed thwart a trade deal.

"Whatever you do is OK with us, just make sure we can trade together, that's all that matters".

As Mr Trump had tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle yesterday, tens of thousands of protesters marched through London. "He has done a awful job".

Tom Swarbrick, former adviser to Theresa May, told Euronews that Trump's comments were "the worst possible start to the trip".

We'll go to Britain for more on Trump's visit and the protests after headlines.

She praised the friendship between the two allies, glossing over Trump's previous remarks that Britain was a "hot spot" in turmoil over Brexit.

Trump added that he wished the Sun newspaper put the "tremendous things" he said about May in its headline, but acknowledged, "That's one of those things".

They gathered under a big "baby Trump" blimp, showing him snarling and holding a mobile phone, dressed in only a nappy.
