Netflix top of the heap as platform leads networks with Emmy nominations

For the most part, though, this year's categories mark a pretty fair representation of TV's best and brightest, while adding drama to the battle that's been brewing to its two foremost bidders for awards prestige. The "Atlanta" and "Barry" multi-hyphenates are vying for Best Comedy Actor, which Glover won previous year, Best Comedy Writing, Best Comedy Directing, Best Comedy Guest Actor (both for "Saturday Night Live") and Best Comedy Series.

HBO awards darling Veep was ineligible this year and its crown passed to Atlanta, the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods.

While Netflix and HBO battle it out for Emmy supremacy - with the streaming service edging the pay channel in total nominations, the first time anyone's done that this century - voters can take a bow for a slate of nominees that both spread the wealth and mostly got it right, barring a few notable exceptions and oversights.

It comes as fellow Australian actresses Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts failed to receive any Emmy nominations for their recent TV performances.

The Emmys ceremony airs September 17 on NBC with Colin Jost and Michael Che of "Saturday Night Live" as hosts.

The nominees for best drama series were The Handmaid's Tale; Game of Thrones; This Is Us; The Crown; The Americans; Stranger Things; and Westworld. Brown is also nominated for comedy series guest actor for "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". He is nominated for best lead actor in a comedy series for playing the title role as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest who falls in love with acting while on a job in Los Angeles.
