Woman climbs base of Statue of Liberty in NY

At first, she put up a struggle with police officers.

Aged 44, Therese Patricia Okoumou managed to scale the base structure of the statue around 3.30 p.m. and was taken in by the police after three hours.

Liberty Island in New York Harbor was evacuated Wednesday after a woman climbed onto the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

The woman could face charges, including trespassing, disorderly conduct and interfering with government functions, according to CNN.

A dogged, elusive protester who dodged cops for hours around the feet of the Statue of Liberty was finally nabbed by officers using ropes and climbing gear. Okoumou allegedly 'staged a risky stunt that alarmed the public and endangered her own life and the lives of the [New York Police Department] officers who responded to the scene, ' US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement released earlier in the day.

Another user, Sarah, said the island was being "evacuated of all tourists". Okoumou is an active member of New York-based activist group Rise and Resist, whose members had previously held an "Abolish I.C.E" banner at the statue.

On Wednesday, the National Park Service shut down Liberty Island after Okoumou climbed to the base of the Statue of Liberty and refused to come down. "The facade of the monument there is a granite rock-like surface that the average person wouldn't be able to scale", said National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis. "People have the right to speak out".

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 and has served as a symbol of the U.S.as a country of immigrants.
