Trump says GOP Senate hopeful loves North Dakota

The president, however, noted Heitkamp's votes against tax cuts he signed into law in December as well as the GOP's long-sought goal to undo the health care program enacted by President Barack Obama.

Trump is known for his freewheeling style during campaign rallies and will have plenty of topics to hit on, including the news earlier Wednesday that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, a key swing vote on the court, is retiring next month.

But he says he's happy that House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California will remain the faces of the Democratic Party.

He says so many things go into the making of a great Supreme Court justice.

"You are the people who farm the prairie, tamed the badlands and squeezed oil out of rock", Trump said, speaking directly to the North Dakota citizens who lived under "big handsome skies".

Those tariffs are a retaliation for trade penalties imposed by the Trump administration. It follows a proposed plan by Harley-Davidson to move some of its production overseas .

In the case of North Dakota, Trump endorsed Republican candidate Kevin Cramer who is up against Democratic incumbent Sen.

"She'll be forced to vote no", Trump said. She won her first term by only about 3,000 votes, and both sides have stockpiled millions for the race.

The political realities of the state are not lost on Heitkamp, who relies on her bipartisan credentials and personal appeal in the state, and has not been afraid to tout her working relationship with President Trump and maintain a measured distance between herself and the brand of the national Democratic Party.

In Fargo, Trump decried Wednesday what he deemed unfair treatment from other countries and said he aims to make trade "fair and reciprocal". North Dakota's agricultural economy is dependent on exports and the Beijing government recently imposed a 25 percent tariff on soybeans, the state's top crop.
