The official also said the South is working closely with the US on negotiations with the North, but declined to comment on the contents of a letter that the North's leader sent to Trump.

At an island resort off the coast of Singapore, U.S. event planners are working day and night with their North Korean counterparts to set up a summit created to bring an end to Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

Experts have voiced concern that despite Trump's claim to be the world's greatest dealmaker, he knows little about North Korea, arms control or global diplomacy.

The planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has raised expectations for a breakthrough in the decades-long standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

The news comes after reports Kim had removed three top military officials from their posts ahead of his scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump in June.

The American insisted he was "just trying to open a door" for better relations between the two countries after decades of sanctions and belligerent rhetoric.

The summit between the two leaders will be held on June 12 in Singapore.

White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders made the announcement during a regular press briefing, adding that significant progress had been made in discussions between USA representative and their North Korean counterparts.

North Korea has a record of getting other countries to cover the costs when leaders and officials attend global events, claiming they can not afford it - despite having the cash to churn out nukes.

The White House has been tight-lipped about Trump's preparations for the summit.
