Tiger Woods makes an eagle at Memorial

Woods wasn't alone in missing short putts.

"There was so many people", Niemann said.

Meanwhile, Woods was first in the field in strokes gained, tee to green; first in strokes gained, approach to the green; and first in proximity to the hole, with an average of 23 feet, 8 inches.

At the 184-yard par-3 12th, Byeong Hun An hit a tee shot 162 yards at the green, setting himself up for the 6-foot putt for birdie.

90 minute weather delay broke his momentum, as he made three successive pars when played resumed. "I turned it into a 67".

Rod Pampling and Marc Leishman both sit at one over during their rounds and are fighting to sneak inside the projected 36-hole cut of even par, while Cameron Davis (nine holes) is a shot back.

Woods took to the practice green shortly after his round.

And he was again trying to keep things in perspective, having played his ninth tournament of the year.

Joaquin Niemann, the 19-year-old from Chile, took the lead with a 50-foot eagle putt and fell out of the lead when his bid for another eagle attempt landed in a tiny corner of a meandering creek.

"It feels really nice to be on top of the leaderboard", he said.

Jutanugarn, a 22-year-old from Thailand, made a clutch bunker shot to within a foot of the hole to save par, beating South Korea's Hyo-Joo Kim, who shot a 5-under 67 in the final round to force the playoff.

Jason Day, who has never finished better than 15th at the Memorial, had another 68 and was three back. Perhaps this is the year. He finished the day five shots behind Bryson DeChambeau.

"That was huge because I just came off three-putting four".

"I had 97 yards and normally it is a 60-degree sand-wedge for me but it was flawless with the slope there behind the flag so I took off about 15 yards on a 56 and I hit a little dead one in there", he said. This week I didn't feel comfortable with my lines and my feel was a little bit off. Justin Thomas, in his debut at No. 1, overcame a pair of early bogeys for a 69 and was at 3 under.

That victory left him four shy of Nicklaus's tally of 18 majors, a target that has looked increasingly beyond Woods in recent years during long injury layoffs. He made the turn in 33 with a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 9, and then he made a solid escape from the rough and trees on No. 11 before holing out for eagle. McIlroy missed three birdie chances inside 8 feet.

"I know I shot 68 today but, again, that's probably the highest score I could have possibly shot", said Woods, who's won the Memorial a record five times.

"I then had that putt on 12 and wanted to keep it going as I was in the rhythm of the round". Woods remains hopeful saying, "I'm in position where if I shoot another good round like I have the last two days I've got a chance".

Rory McIlroy didn't figure to be in contention at the Memorial, but he showed how much difference a stellar Saturday round can make. Even so, he could only advance it 100 yards and made bogey for a 70.

Rounding out the Australian contingent is Cameron Smith, whose 72 left him at three over and is likely to miss the weekend.

Since his closing 64 at the Masters, Spieth has finished at least 12 shots behind the victor in his three tournaments and missed the cut in his final event before heading to Shinnecock Hills for the U.S. Open.
