According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Luck said the job "will be a labor of love" and a "unique opportunity to re-imagine the game that has been a constant in my life for 40 years", according to an email.

Former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck is leaving his high-ranking position at the NCAA to become commissioner of the XFL, the second edition of professional wrestling mogul Vince McMahon's football league.

"Oliver and I share the same vision and passion for reimagining the game of football".

The XFL isn't the only new football league looking to find footing.

McMahon is investing $100 million into the XFL's restart, which folded in 2001 after one season.

During the launch announcement in January, McMahon made it a point to draw a hard line on national anthem rules, saying it would be "appropriate" that future XFL players stand for the "Star-Spangled Banner". He joined the NCAA in 2014 as executive vice president of regulatory affairs and strategic partnerships.

Luck has considerable sports-executive experience, in other words, and his hiring shows that XFL founder Vince McMahon is taking things a little more seriously this time around.

Luck, 58, the father of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, played four seasons under center with the old Houston Oilers in the early 1980s.

This is not Luck's first experience with an upstart football league.

"It has been a tremendous honor to serve my alma mater as director of athletics", Luck said at the time.

Luck earned his J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, graduating cum laude in 1987. The first season is scheduled to be a 10-week season. "The XFL will also establish a health, wellness and safety program that meets the needs of today's athletes".

The XFL will embrace the latest on and off-field technology, providing live game coverage, content and real-time engagement across multiple platforms, giving fans greater access than ever before.
