Trump lawyer counselled him against firing Sessions

Gowdy told CBS that Trump is just "expressing frustration that Attorney General Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job".

A source familiar with discussions inside the Trump's legal team said the President did press Sessions to reverse his decision to recuse himself in the Russian Federation investigation, as The New York Times first reported.

Gowdy said he believes Trump would have picked someone else had he known Sessions would step back from that investigation.

Trump wanted Sessions to take control of the Russian Federation matter, the Times reported, in order to protect him - he evidently felt he could exercise more control over Sessions than over Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who eventually appointed special counsel Robert Mueller.

"I have always said, 'I think you ought to sit down. you've told us publicly there was no collusion, there was no obstruction, ' " Gowdy said.

Johnson also praised Kushner and Ivanka Trump , and said she supports their efforts in a criminal justice reform bill. Kim is expected to ask Trump to pardon the great-grandmother.

The perpetual Trump hatefest waged by the media has been given new fuel by Rep. Trey Gowdy's comments approving the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign. The source said Trump was bothered by the scope of Sessions' decision to recuse, viewing it as going overboard.

Trump demanded Sessions's resignation after Mueller was appointed in May 2017 because of his decision to recuse himself.

One day later, Trump renewed his attacks against Sessions.

But Gowdy Wednesday said that based on the information he was provided the true target of the FBI's investigative efforts was Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 election.

Trump latched on to that portion of the retiring Gowdy's interview.

He said that no fair-minded prosecutor would hire attorney Andrew Weissmann as Mueller has. "The president would have every right to ask him to unrecuse himself", he added.
