Steady rise in supermarket fuel prices

Now, three top metro cities are charging you over Rs 71 per litre, as in Mumbai and Chennai the rates are higher than Rs 73 per litre, while Kolkata is just marginally away from joining the club of Rs 72 per litre.

Along with Delhi, prices in Mumbai and Chennai have already reached record levels and are only reaching new highs every single day.

Petrol was sold at Rs 86.08 per litre in Mumbai, against Rs 85.93 on Sunday, data from the Indian Oil Corp's website showed. The petrol price was seen at Rs 74.80 per litre, the highest since September 2013, and diesel was seen at Rs 66.14 per litre.

On 26 March, average supermarket fuel prices were 116.7p for a litre of petrol and 119.4p for diesel. It is being sold at Rs 79.71 in Bangalore, Rs 82.62 in Trivandrum, Rs 82.80 in Srinagar, Rs 80.10 in Jammu, Rs 78.58 in Shimla, Rs 83.89 in Patna, Rs 78.82 in Lucknow, Rs 81.22 in jaipur, 83.08 in Hyderabad, Rs 80.66 in Guwahati, 81.45 in Gangtok, Rs 75.43 in Chandigarh and Rs 84.06 in Bhopal.

Meanwhile, the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Monday announced an increase in the prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Delhi and nearby areas, comprising Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad as a result of the recent appreciation of dollar and revision in proportions of domestic gas allocation. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had also said that the government will intervene to reduce prices.

"For a long-term solution, Government of India is planning for a holistic strategy. bringing petroleum products within the ambit of GST is one among them", he said.

Supermarket fuel prices have risen every day since the end of March, with average prices at the big four retailers going up by more than eight pence per litre. The opposition parties and people have been demanding a cut in Centre and state tax on fuels.
