The storm, which by Friday morning had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, is expected to slow down when it reaches land, prolonging heavy rain.

Many times these subtropical storms transform into true tropical cyclones.

Six days before hurricane season even begins, we already have our first named storm of the year.

A tropical storm watch was issued Friday for the northern Gulf Coast from Indian Pass, Florida westward to the metropolitan New Orleans, as well as for Mexico, from popular cruise destination Tulum to Cabo Catoche.

Heavy rain will likely begin to affect the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern US later this weekend and continue into early next week. A subtropical storm means the center of circulation is exposed and the rain and thunderstorms are pushed away from the center. It became a tropical storm that meandered off the cast coast of Georgia and SC.
