An IPS officer of 1988 batch, the 54-year-old celebrated officer had shot himself in the mouth with his service revolver, around 1.40 PM. His wife rushed him to a hospital in his vehicle, but he was declared brought dead. During the investigation, the police found a suicide note in Roy's room which stated poor health as the reason for his suicide. "Maybe he felt burdened and decided he could not take it anymore", special prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said. Officers who knew him personally have expressed shock at his suicide and said that he had become reclusive after he was diagnosed with cancer.

In a separate interview that Nagarkar gave to The Hindu, the doctor said it wasn't so much the disease itself but the emotional trauma it had on him that may have led to Roy taking the extreme step. The Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was serving as the Additional Director General of Police in Maharashtra and was on 6 months medical leave since April 2016 which was extended indefinitely. Though he had undergone treatment for his cancer in the United State, family sources said there had been a relapse in his ailment.

With a sterling career to his credit, Roy had been ailing with cancer for some time and was on medical leave when he chose to take the extreme step.
