Trump defied European pleas to stay in the pact, which curbs Iran's nuclear program, and reimposed crippling sanctions which will come into effect within six months.

"Germany, France and Britain have decided that we will abide by the agreement, and we will do everything we can to see that Iran also abides by its responsibilities in the future", said Merkel.

"It's no longer the case that the United States will simply just protect us", Merkel said to applause in a speech honoring French President Emmanuel Macron, who sat behind her at a prize ceremony in Aachen, Germany.

This statement comes a day after Israel attacked multiple Iranian military targets in Syria in response to a failed attempt to fire missiles into Israeli territory.

The Middle East was becoming very unsafe, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, adding that there was no "Plan B" in response to Trump's move and that France wanted to keep the accord alive even without Washington on board.

The Chancellor noted that "on Europe's doorstep" there are many major global conflicts and expressed concern about the risk of war between Israel and Iran in Syria.

Macron echoed Merkel, saying European nations should not allow "other major powers, including allies" to "put themselves in a situation to decide our diplomacy [and] security for us".

"We will work collectively on a broader framework, covering nuclear activity, the post-2025 period, ballistic activity, and stability in the Middle-East, notably Syria, Yemen, and Iraq", Macron added.

At a time when the United States is going its own way in ditching the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord, as well as threatening allies with punitive trade tariffs, Macron said Europe needs more than ever to stand united and show greater strength.

Mr Macron echoed the call for Europe to stand united and show greater strength, at a time when the U.S. is going its own way in ditching the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord, as well as threatening allies with punitive trade tariffs. "We made the choice to build peace in the Middle East".

Turning the tables on the German argument, Macron said: "In Germany, there can not be a perpetual fetish for budget and trade surpluses, because they are achieved at the expense of others".
