Funeral Arrangements Made For Kevin Kamenetz; County Offices To Close Early Friday

The 60-year-old Kamenetz, who was the Baltimore County executive, was a leading contender in a top field of seven for the Democratic nomination in Maryland's governor race before he died early Thursday morning from cardiac arrest, according to Baltimore County first responders and a University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center doctor who treated Kamenetz.

In a press release, officials say Kamenetz was at his home in Owings Mills, asleep, when he awoke at about 2 a.m. and complained of feeling ill.

The two-term county executive had worked in Maryland politics for almost 25 years.

The county's administrative officer Fred Homan has taken on the role of "acting county executive effective immediately", Mohler told The Baltimore Sun.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh said Kamenetz was an "ardent supporter" of Baltimore and someone she "admired". He also served as a councilman. In a tweet, Baker called Kamenetz's death "sad, shocking news".

County Executive Kamenetz was a dedicated public servant who gave 24 years of service to Baltimore County. Governor Hogan, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, Congressman Elijah Cummings and Senator Chris Van Hollen are among the many local and state leaders to express their shock and sorrow on the passing of Kamenetz. "My heart goes out to Jill and his family, along with his many friends and staff".

Kamenetz is survived by his wife and two sons.
