Ferguson is now awake and talking with with family and friends, much to the relief of supporters from across the globe, and details of his first words after the operation have emerged.

However, doctors expressed cautious optimism and recognize that the healing process 76-year-old Ferguson will be long.

However, Manchester United, the club he managed for 26 years, have said the surgery went "extremely well" and the Scot is recovering in intensive care.

Ferguson retired from the game in 2013 after having guided the Red Devils to an unprecedented 20th Premier League title and the English giants have failed to win the league since then, despite splashing the cash each summer.
