23 killed after twin coal mine collapses in Pakistan

In the first incident, a total of 16 person were trapped after a gas explosion in Pir Ismail, Marwar (45 km from Quetta) at around noon.

Two neighbouring coal mines collapsed after gas explosions in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, killing 23 people, officials said yesterday. Two workers were rescued in an unconscious condition, while bodies of two miners were recovered Saturday night.

Officials told media outlets that 16 people died when one mine collapsed after a buildup of methane gas lead to an explosion.

"We have recovered all the 16 bodies from the rubble caused by the collapse in the coal mine", Mr. Atique said. Mr. Ahmed said rescue operations have been completed at both sites.

Pakistani mines are notorious for poor safety standards and bad ventilation. All the injured miners were rescued and taken to the hospital.

At least seven others were killed in a landslide at a nearby mine.

The resolution said those found guilty of negligence be awarded punishments, mines where such fatal incidents took place be sealed and laws pertaining to safety of miners be implemented.

There were 30 labourers inside the mine when the explosion occurred. According to Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation (PCMLF), about 100 to 200 labourers die on average in coalmine accidents every year.

Mines in Pakistan are mostly owned by state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, which leases many of them to private contractors.
