The Democratic candidate, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo, released the returns on Friday after initially filing an extension on her taxes.

The returns of Nixon, who is chasing Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo from the political left, depict the financial activities of a successful businesswoman with an acting company, founded in 1999 and which she calls Fickle Mermaid Corp., along with rental income from two downstate apartments and a foundation that made $45,000 in donations past year to an array of causes. Nixon is married to Christine Marinoni, who left her job in New York City government this year. The poll conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Texas as a public service and for research.

She filed income tax returns in five different states, though several - like on $21 in royalty income in Utah - were for relatively small amounts. Housing advocates have criticized this policy as creating an incentive for landlords to make rent-stabilized apartments unlivable to force out tenants and raise rents, and Cuomo said last month that he wants to end the practice as well. When an array of expenses and other deductions were made, the adjusted income for federal tax purposes totaled almost $620,000.

Nixon's campaign said her true income was about $1 million in 2017, noting that the overall figure of $1.5 million does not reflect some expenses incurred by Nixon's corporation, while it does include receipts from the sales of securities which are not classified as income for tax purposes. She and her wife had an adjusted gross income of just under $620,000.

Most of the money was contributed by a family foundation.

With nearly equal support from men and women, Cuomo tops Nixon 50 percent to 28 percent in a Democratic primary as he seeks a third term.
