Labour fails to take flagship London councils in local elections

UKIP lost three seats on a night when a third of the council, 16 seats, were being contested.

Labour's Ellie Emberson, 19, made history when she won Minster ward, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the council.

Cllr Andrew Western, leader of the Labour Trafford group said: "We hoped to take the council into no overall control tonight but to become the largest party at the same time is a fantastic bonus for us".

Labour's majority is 14.

One of them included that of former Conservative culture boss, Linda Symes, who in a crushing blow to the Tories was dethroned from her St Jude seat by Labour's Judith Smyth.

BOTH Labour and the Conservatives declared themselves "delighted" with Thursday's Local Election results in Wirral - despite neither party actually making any gains.

The Lib Dems have gained at least 20 seats across the country.

With the highest proportion of Jewish residents in England, at 15.5 percent, the result was being seen as an indication of the extent to which a row between Labour and the Jewish community over the handling of anti-Semitism in the party has affected the public mood.

But council leader Harry Trueman, whose wife Dorothy secured re-election on the night in Washington West, ended the night with a warning for the newly energised opposition.

Reflecting on the result, Wakefield's Labour council leader Peter Box said: "It's been a mixed night".

"I'm pleased with the gains we've made, but we obviously still have a lot of hard work ahead and I'm keen to get on with that as quickly as possible".

The storm also hit the capital Delhi , more than 100km away, along with heavy rains late on Wednesday evening. The stormy weather comes in the wake of a heat wave that pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.


The Tories also gained three seats.

The result, however, has no bearing on the balance of power at Shire Hall with the Conservatives holding 36 of the council's 57 seats.

Many conversations turned to what would most likely cause Labour to tip the result to no overall control. "This must have been very worrying for Labour so soon after last year's General Election result".

"Pallion in particular I have to highlight, as just months ago it was the leader's ward and in the space of however many months it's now a majority Lib Dem ward with our strongest vote share in the city".

The Tories retained control of Wandsworth Council, last won by Labour in 1974, after winning more than half the seats, as well as Westminster City Council.

He added: "Our safe and reliable operations and strong financial delivery have continued into 2018". Payments are expected to be just over $3 billion in 2018, weighted to the first half of the year.
