A group of 18 House lawmakers signed a letter formally nominating President Donald Trump for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula.

They touted Trump's "tireless" work "to apply maximum pressure to North Korea to end its illicit weapons programs and bring peace to the region".

"I thought it was very generous of President Moon of South Korea to make that statement, and I appreciate it", Trump said Tuesday. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha both credited Trump for the breakthrough.

The award is announced annually in December.

The Trump administration has led a global effort to impose ever stricter sanctions on North Korea and the USA president exchanged bellicose threats with Kim in the past year over North Korea's development of nuclear missiles capable of reaching the United States.

The effort to win President Trump a new piece of gold kicked off in earnest Wednesday.

But backers occasionally reveal their choice of nomination for the award, as is the case with Trump's 2019 recommendation. "What we need is only peace". Furthermore, North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, stated that they would only get rid of their nuclear weapons if the safety of the country could be given. During a raucous re-election rally in MI on Saturday, the crowd broke out into a chant of "Nobel, Nobel" while Trump was discussing his efforts in North Korea. Even Obama admitted in his acceptance speech that past recipients were "far more deserving of this honor than I".

No matter what the likelihood is for Trump's getting a Nobel, his public image among South Koreans has been improving markedly as the mood on the Korean peninsula shifts from fears of war to hopes of peace. He allegedly told Trump that the crisis would be his "biggest problem" in foreign policy.

Pelosi and other Trump detractors are in an uncomfortable position where the Nobel Peace Prize is concerned. After all President Obama received it for little more than running a glamorous campaign for president.

Sceptics, however, say that Jong-un might be duping Jae-in and Trump into a false peace.

The Nobel chatter also reflects an impassioned debate taking place over the exact role of America's president in the ongoing diplomatic overtures.

As well as Obama, three US presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Jimmy Carter.
