"If I was Steven Gerrard looking at that squad, and baring in mind they have got five loan players to leave as well as players out of contract and guys who are now on loan overseas to come back, I'd be thinking this is a £50million, £60million, £70million project", he said. But, even if the 37-year-old, who is now the under-18 coach at Liverpool, accepts the job this week, he will not take charge until June.

The gap between Rangers and Glasgow rivals Celtic looked as big as ever last weekend when the Hoops hammered them 5-0 to seal a seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title while off the pitch the club still owes over £15 million in loans and recorded a £6.7 million net loss in their latest accounts. It is understood he would have been dismissed as manager regardless of how talks with Gerrard and his representatives were progressing.

Ibrox chiefs, who have been in talks with former Liverpool and England midfielder Gerrard for the past week, say they hope to be able to release details about Murty's successor "in the near future".

In reality, Warnock will want to carry on the superb job which he has done with current club Cardiff City despite him and Rangers possibly being a match made in heaven while Gerrard is likely to start a new era at Ibrox. He will take some time to consider his options, which include returning to his role at the Rangers Academy.
