British Toddler who sparked medical ethics debate mourned

Alfie's parents took to Facebook to announce their sons passing, saying: "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am".

"Pope Francis, who had publicly supported Evans and James' campaign, wrote condolences that were posted Saturday on Twitter. Today i pray especially for his parents, as God the Father receives him into his tender embrace". But his parents fought for months to try to convince judges to allow them to take him to the Vatican's children's hospital, where life support would have been maintained. "Thankyou everyone for all your support", his mother, Kate James, posted on the "Alfies Army Official" Facebook page. "This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected".

Alfie tragically passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, his father confirmed.

Pope Francis tweeted that he was "moved by the death of little Alfie" and that his prayers was with his parents. Pope Francis personally met with Thomas Evans.

The hospital said in a statement that it consulted with outside doctors, including ones in Rome, who concluded that the child's condition was irreversible and untreatable.

Alfie was granted Italian citizenship on Monday, with the country's government saying it hoped the toddler could have an "immediate transfer to Italy".

Emotions have run high over the case, with supporters staging angry protests regularly outside the hospital, at times trying to storm its entrance. In such cases, the rights of the child take primacy over the parents' right to decide what's best for their offspring.

His parents said that the youngster had defied doctors' expectations and they took their case to the Court of Appeal, but the application to take him overseas was rejected. His parents also demanded from the authorities not to disconnect the child from life support.

Speaking outside Alder Hey Hospital, Tom said: "We got rejected yesterday to go to Italy unfortunately". Staff at the hospital treating Alfie were reportedly threatened after medical experts in Britain agreed that more treatment for Alfie would be futile, but his parents wanted to take him to Rome, where the Vatican's Bambino Gesu hospital had offered to care for him.

He died a year ago, one week short of his first birthday, after doctors withdrew life support treatment.

King, now eight years old, has since been declared clear of the disease.
