AfDB calls for domestic financing to fight malaria

The World Health Organisation leads in the celebration of World Malaria Day on Wednesday, April 25th, with the theme, "Ready to Beat Malaria".

It is intended as an energising call to arms for organisations the world over to drive towards one shared goal of a malaria-free world.

"World Malaria Day is an occasion to renew political commitment and to continue investing for malaria prevention and control".

Quoting a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Lal Thanzara said almost 213 million of world's population had malaria and four lakh people died of mosquito bites in 2016. Nearly half the world's population - about 3.2 billion people - are at risk of malaria.

All around the world, the consciousness of people is evermore increased with respect to the sundry life-threatening disease, of which malaria is not an exception. Children under the age of five, pregnant women and patients with HIV-AIDS are most at risk.

Dr. Chilufya said government's malaria elimination strategy has an estimation of over US$ 694 million from 2017 to 2021.

For many years, World Malaria Day has been a cause for celebration, but not this year.

"Most times the type of mosquitoes it may breed may not cause malaria but causes other diseases such as; zika virus, yellow fever and so on".

He pointed out that to effectively combat the spread of malaria which pose a major public health hazard with significant man hour and productivity lost, Nigerians are encouraged to keep their environment clean and use insecticide treated mosquito nets as often as they can.

Out of this figure, Africa accounted for 407,000 deaths from malaria in 2016.

Significant global progress has been made since 2000 to reduce the incidence and mortality of malaria, says the NIH in a press release. If safe and effective, the antibody potentially could be used among tourists, health care workers, and military personnel to prevent malaria infection for up to six months or be used in malaria elimination campaigns in conjunction with drug therapy.
