Prime Minister Theresa May said the day would commemorate Stephen's life and legacy each year, in an announcement at the service at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square.

The 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence was fatally stabbed by a gang of racists in south-east London on 22 April 1993.

However, only two of the group of up to six thugs who attacked the teenager and his friend Duwayne Brooks, simply because they were black, have been convicted of murder. Alas, the case is still not closed: suspect was charged with only 10 years after the crime, but they are still on the loose.

The murder of Stephen Lawrence is one of the most notorious cases in modern Britain.

It has since emerged that the police also sent an undercover officer to spy on the grieving Lawrence family in the late 1990s as they campaigned for justice.

Five men were arrested in the following months, but charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.

Gary Dobson and David Norris were finally convicted and jailed for life in 2012 over the attack.

Stephen's father Neville Lawrence, 76, announced last week that he had made the humbling decision to forgive his son's killers. "Harry has said there's no pressure on her to do anything".

"25 years is a long time to be out campaigning", she told ITV television, adding that she would like to spend more time "on positive things", including her grandchildren. "Now I think, enough".
