Prime Minister Theresa May said the day would commemorate Stephen's life and legacy each year, in an announcement at the service at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square.

The 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence was fatally stabbed by a gang of racists in south-east London on 22 April 1993.

However, only two of the group of up to six thugs who attacked the teenager and his friend Duwayne Brooks, simply because they were black, have been convicted of murder. Alas, the case is still not closed: suspect was charged with only 10 years after the crime, but they are still on the loose.

The murder of Stephen Lawrence is one of the most notorious cases in modern Britain.

Saudi Forces Shoot Down 'Toy Drone' Near Royal Palace
Fears that an armed coup was underway in Saudi Arabia's palace have been dismissed as a drone which got too close to the gates. Gunfire was heard near Saudi Arabia's royal palace Saturday with conflicting reports after a drone reportedly neared the site.

It also highlighted the ills of racism for the entire British public.

However, Jon Boutcher, a senior officer who leads on race issues for the National Police Chiefs' Council, warned that concerns remain in some communities. The Trust works to help youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

It has since emerged that the police also sent an undercover officer to spy on the grieving Lawrence family in the late 1990s as they campaigned for justice.

Five men were arrested in the following months, but charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.

Nikki Haley's SOS to the nation

Gary Dobson and David Norris were finally convicted and jailed for life in 2012 over the attack.

Stephen's father Neville Lawrence, 76, announced last week that he had made the humbling decision to forgive his son's killers. "Harry has said there's no pressure on her to do anything".

"25 years is a long time to be out campaigning", she told ITV television, adding that she would like to spend more time "on positive things", including her grandchildren. "Now I think, enough".
