If romaine lettuce has been present in consumers' refrigerator shelves, they should follow the CDC's five steps to sanitize their fridge.

"Based on new information, CDC is expanding its warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region".

Yuma County is responsible for 90 percent of all leafy vegetables grown in the US, from November to March, according to the county's Chamber of Commerce .

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an updated statement on Friday urging consumers not to buy or consume romaine lettuce "unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma, Ariz., growing region".

Matt Harvey is no one's hero
Jeurys Familia blew the save in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Braves, surrendering two runs on three hits over 2/3 of an inning. An All-Star back in 2013, Harvey simply has not been the same since missing the entire 2014 campaign with a UCL tear.

Alaska's Department of Health & Social Services said eight inmates at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center contracted acute gastroenteritis in E. coli cases linked to romaine lettuce from Yuma.

Wegmans stores have also posted signs indicating that all of the chopped, whole and romaine hearts being sold in its stores come from growing areas other than Yuma.

"Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten", the CDC said. While the warnings focus on store-bought romaine lettuce, the warning does extend to all restaurants, as well. They were traced to lettuce harvested in the Yuma region, according to the CDC.

Canadians can continue to use romaine lettuce in their salads, says the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Some kinds of E. coli cause disease by making a toxin called Shiga toxin.

"If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away". The bacteria that make these toxins are called Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC for short.

The CDC and state health officials have spoken to the people who got infected. More cases of E. Coli infection may be reported in the coming weeks, since some people may not immediately report the illness.
