Russia, Syria say Israel bombs Syrian military base

Syrian forces were able to shoot down five of the eight missiles, according to the defense ministry. But he suggested that the airstrike came in response to a reported chemical attack that killed 40 people in Damascus.

The strikes came less than two days after a chemical weapons attack in the rebel-held Syrian town of Douma, for which both the United States and France threatened to retaliate.

On Monday, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, citing its own correspondent, that the Tiyas airbase in the province of Homs had been subjected to a missile attack.

President Trump vowed there would be a "big price to pay" for the chemical attack but after the latest airstrike, Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood said "at this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting airstrikes in Syria".
