The apartment destroyed by a raging fire in New York's Trump Tower that killed a resident and injured six firefighters had no sprinkler system, authorities said.

But the president took to Twitter last night to discuss the fire, saying that it was well-contained, and that the building is "well built".

Mr Brassner, an art dealer, was a friend of the late artist Andy Warhol and is mentioned several times in the legendary New Yorker's 1989 autobiography The Andy Warhol Diaries.

In the end, the legislation passed and was signed by Giuliani.

So far, President Trump's only public reaction to the deadly Saturday fire at the midtown building that bears his name was a single tweet in which he incorrectly claimed that the fire was out (it wasn't brought under control until an hour later) and talked up the high quality of the building.

The bill as it was initially written would have impacted two of his buildings, Trump Tower and Trump World Tower, which had already been approved but began construction in 1999. To this day, Trump Tower lacks them on its residential floors. "This is a very hard fire, as you can imagine".

Todd Brassner lived on the 50th floor of the Fifth Avenue luxury high-rise, and was in his apartment when the fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Owners of older residential high-rises such as Trump Tower are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovation.

'Very confined (well built building). One fire-fighter was hospitalised while two people received minor injuries that were treated at the scene, the New York Fire Department said. Firemen (and women) did a great job. "When I saw the television, I thought we were finished", said 76-year-old Lalitha Masson told the Times, adding that she called her oldest soon to say goodbye.

In 1999, Trump lobbied NY councillors against a proposed measure obligating high rise landlords to install sprinkler systems, following a blaze at a property not owned by the then real estate magnate which killed four people.

Officials have not disclosed the cause of the blaze.

As well as his luxury residence, Trump Tower also contains offices of the Trump family business. The headquarters of the Trump Organization is on the 26th floor.
