We're delighted that the soft drinks industry have risen to the challenge and taken tonnes of sugar out of their products.

What is the sugar tax? Professor Nava Ashraf, from the London School of Economics, is a leader in the field of behavioural economics.

People who rely on energy drinks to treat hypos are being urged to check labels to ensure the carbohydrates have not dropped in response to the levy, with Lucozade already halving its sugar content. Now this doesn't affect natural sugar in fruit juice (because it wasn't added later) or drinks that are milk-based due to the high calcium content.

Supermarkets Asda, Morrisons and Tesco have announced that they have cut the amount of sugar in their own-brand drinks to below the taxable level.

According to British health experts, all age groups in the United Kingdom are consuming too much sugar but teenagers are consuming the most.

"The levy will mean that any drinks with more than 5g of added sugar per 100ml will face a cost of 18p per litre (or 6p per 330ml can), increasing to 24p per litre (8p per 330ml can) for drinks with more than 8g of sugar per 100ml". Now many drinks contain less sugar, presumably in order to not be hit so hard by the tax.

The Government and health campaigners hope the higher prices will put consumers off buying the most sugary drunks and lead to a significant decline in obesity.

In a statement on its website, a spokesman from the British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) pointed towards a lack of scientific evidence to support the positive health claims. Fruit juice and smoothies should be limited to 150ml a day. Sugar is embedded into a surprisingly large number of processed foods, popping up in most things you'll find on the shelves. These costs will be passed down to retailers and their customers.
