Peace in Afghanistan key to regional stability: Ghani

He added that in a meeting of the director generals military operations of the two countries held in Rawalpindi on Thursday, Pakistan had shared details of the operations with the Afghan side indicating that these operations were on the Pakistani side of the border.

Earlier, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: "The Prime Minister's visit is taking place in the backdrop of Pakistan's support to President Ghani's offer of peace talks with the Taliban for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and strengthening bilateral engagement", read a statement issued by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said Abbasi was visiting Kabul on an invitation of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

The talks will focus on "strengthening bilateral political, economic, security and counter-terrorism cooperation, the return of Afghan refugees, combating drug production and narco-trade, Afghan peace process and regional political and security situation", the statement read.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have had rocky relations since the USA invasion of Afghanistan in 2002 with both side accusing each other of using militants against each other.

The two sides conferred on initiating work on the Quetta-Kandahar and Peshawar-Jalalabad railway lines, as well as the Peshawar-Jalalabad-Kabul highway. The premier will hold consultations with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah over the visit.

During his stay in Kabul, Abbasi also met with senior political leaders, including Gulbadin Hekmatyar, Ustad Mohammad Mohaqiq, Ustad Mohammad Karim Khalili, Pir Sayed Hamed Gailani, to convey the support of the government and people of Pakistan to all ethnic groups in Afghanistan and underscore Pakistan's commitment to peace and stability in Afghanistan.
