He's also taking liberties as he makes his case for a new crackdown on the southern border to stop illegal immigration, including requesting the deployment of the National Guard.

At the White House that afternoon, Trump spoke of his intention to deploy the National Guard to the southern border because of Congress's failure to properly defend the nation against the invasion.

Guard members sent to the border to help don't always come from border states. "It's like it's a war", said the President. "The situation at the border has now reached a point of crisis. My administration has no choice but to act". We have to change our laws.

Trump has been frustrated by slow action on building his "big, handsome wall" along the Mexican border - the signature promise of his campaign - as well as a recent uptick in illegal border crossings, which had plunged during the early months of his presidency, giving Trump an accomplishment to point to when he had few. "That's a big step".

"If you have a baby on our land, congratulations, that baby is a United States citizen", Trump said.

They performed support duties aimed at freeing up federal agents to focus on border security.

Presidential candidate Ricardo Anaya went further, saying Mexico should limit anti-terrorism cooperation until the National Guard is withdrawn. Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low.

Trump's announcement came a day after Beijing announced plans to tax Dollars 50 billion in American products, including soybeans and small aircraft, in response to a US move earlier this week to slap tariffs on USD 50 billion in Chinese imports. Those figures include 1,099 unaccompanied minors and 5,127 families in March, increases from February's 610 and 3,941, respectively.

In March, 37,393 immigrants were caught along the southwest border, the highest monthly total since December 2016.

Immigration advocacy groups have criticized the plan as a pointless waste of money. And press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later said that she was "not sure why the media is acting like this isn't a well-established fact - women and young girls are brutally victimized on the journey north".

If 4,000 troops were deployed, that would be more than the United States now has in Syria and about half as many as the number of U.S. troops in Iraq. While announcing his military plan for the border, Trump praised Mexico for efforts to break up the caravan.

"In light of China's unfair retaliation, I have instructed the USTR to consider whether $100 billion of additional tariffs would be appropriate under section 301 and, if so, to identify the products upon which to impose such tariffs", Trump said in a statement issued by the White House.

The president instead launched into a freewheeling riff on several unrelated topics, including extended remarks on illegal immigration in which he hearkened back to controversial and unsubstantiated comments he made on the campaign trail in 2015 when he said: "when Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best".

Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., called it "the latest chapter in his reign of terror meant to wreak havoc on immigrants and residents of border communities". "It is also now clear that Congress will not give him the money to begin construction of his 'big, attractive wall'".
