If improving a site's mobile speed isn't possible before the July update and businesses start seeing organic rankings decrease, they may want to focus on Google AdWords, using mobile-specific ads.

Google this week announced that it would be purchasing gif aggregation company, Tenor. The removal of the View Image button from the image search page is still something people don't appreciate.

We continue to have one single index that we use for serving search results. Through its blog post, Google gave a proper definition of Mobile-first Indexing. For example, there are times when a desktop-oriented page would rank higher than a mobile-friendly page, purely because it had better information.

Google is now the new owner of tenor, having acquired the GIF platform to fuel its quest to include more GIFs in Google image search results or its other services such as Gboard. Google originally sought to develop Android as a Java Mobile button-phone platform similar to BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, but was blindsided by Apple's release of iPhone in 2007.

To fix this issue, the company has begun experimenting with a "mobile-first" approach to indexing web pages. For the first time, website loading speeds on mobile devices will be used as ranking factors in search results. Content gathered by mobile-first indexing has no ranking advantage over mobile content that's not yet gathered this way or desktop content. Google has added other content to its results pages as well, such as a Google Image results widget, and other widgets that aren't always relevant. Since 2015, this measure can help mobile-friendly content perform better for those who are searching on mobile.

Google isn't going to maintain separate search indexes for mobile and desktop.

Mobile traffic on the internet first officially surpassed desktop traffic in October 2016, according to StatCounter. Google has informed that it will notify the site owners via messages about their sites being migrated to mobile-first indexing process.

Google's announcements also highlight the importance of incorporating consumers' increasing use of mobile devices into their marketing and PR efforts.
