Josh McDaniels discusses decision to reject Colts

After agreeing to become the head coach of the Colts, McDaniels backed out. Since coming back to New England after his quick stint as the head coach in Denver, McDaniels has helped the Patriots have one of the best offenses in the National Football League during that span. In his first comments since pulling the ol' switcheroo, he explained to the Boston Globe that he "absolutely" wants to be a head coach again.

Kraft will always have fond memories of Butler, now with Tennessee, whose goal-line interception iced the Patriots win over Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX. In his first season of owning the Patriots in 1993, the team went 5-11 under then-coach Bill Parcells, who also was in his first season in New England.

"Once I heard from Robert and Bill on that Tuesday, it just gave me reason to pause and consider this whole situation, " said McDaniels, who was given no guarantees about future positions, but did have his contract adjusted. "So, where did I fit in?"

"I've owned the team 24 seasons, and I've had Bill [Belichick] as a head coach for 18 of those seasons", Kraft said.

Which is nice for McDaniels, but the Colts were stung. The end of the 2018 season is 10 months away and there's no crystal ball for the unprecedented situation in New England. We have to have empathy and a sense of concern for all points of view, for all people and be good listeners. "[We were] very confident even Tuesday morning", he told reporters in February. But if they wanted McDaniels that badly at the time, wouldn't they have gotten something done sooner instead of risking his departure? The assistants were able to keep their jobs and the Colts eventually hired Frank Reich, former offensive coordinator of the Eagles.

"Chris was tremendous the whole entire time, " said McDaniels.

It doesn't matter what McDaniels says. "That's what I wanted to do", he said. "I apologized to them if it put them in an awkward position". They have great opportunities, they're great coaches, they're great people, and I'm happy that it worked out for them in that regard. "That certainly wasn't a part of my thought process", McDaniels continued.

Although McDaniels expressed confidence in that he made the right decision, he was also apologetic to those affected by his change of heart. Belichick significantly curtailed Alex Guerrero's sideline access this season, and according to ESPN's Seth Wickersham -- whose exposes look more correct with each passing day -- Brady is tiring of Belichick's negativity.

While the Patriots have said nothing regarding McDaniels' being Belichick's successor, there has been no shortage of speculation that the offensive coordinator was given some assurance he'll be the choice to take over for Belichick when he retires.

Over the past year, the word tension has been thrown around a lot when the subject of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's relationship comes up.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft helped students and families of victims of Parkland shooting fly from Fort Lauderdale to Washington D.C. and back for this weekend's "March For Our Lives" rally. "The only question left to answer is when will that transition happen".

McDaniels said that meeting swayed his decision.
