The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge went dark for an hour yesterday, kicking off a global campaign that will see landmark buildings around the world dim their lights to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change.

The global event, which tales place tonight, Saturday, March 24, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, is aimed at highlighting efforts to protect the planet against the effects of climate change. Every year since it's induction, people around the globe commit to turning off the lights for one hour. Last year, residents cut power use by just 0.3%.

Those 60 minutes are "an opportunity to adopt a shifting of the consumption culture, and behavior change towards sustainability", Indian Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said in a statement.
